Dominant force today

Today was driven by mega-cap concentration. A handful of the largest names carried the index while the equal-weight measure (RSP +1.20%) lagged.

ConditionsAn ordinary session in both size and pace.

Short term

QQQ slips lower

Overnight, Nasdaq futures set their high of 29,794.25 by 6:05 p.m. the prior evening, fell 311.00 points to a low of 29,483.25 by 10:40 p.m. the prior evening, then recovered 128.25 points into the 9:30 open. That left them down 380.50 points (-1.27%) from the prior cash close, after being down as much as 508.75 points (-1.70%). The overnight range was 1.0 times that of a typical recent night. By session: Asian hours -342.50 points on 1.5 times the usual volume, European hours -19.75 points on 1.0 times the usual volume, the US pre-market -18.25 points on 1.3 times the usual volume. Scheduled before the open: GDP at 8:30 a.m., Personal Income at 8:30 a.m., Weekly Jobless Claims at 8:30 a.m. The cash open came near the middle of the overnight range. The overnight high held through the day session; the overnight low was broken by 9:35 a.m.

QQQ gapped down at the open to $716.55, below the prior close of $725.61, hit the session low of $711.62 by 9:40, then extended the move higher into a session high of $718.07 by 11:35, and closed at $715.34, down $10.27 (-1.42%) from the prior close, holding near the high with only a modest give-back into the close. By the clock: the opening hour lost $0.94 (-0.13%), midday lost $2.64 (-0.37%), and the final two hours added $2.36 (+0.33%). The final two hours ran against the direction set in the opening hour.

The fastest stretch of the day came between 10:20 and 10:50: QQQ fell $2.98 (-0.42%) in half an hour, 4.3x a typical move for that time of day over the prior 20 sessions, on 0.8x the usual volume for that time of day. For a session's fastest stretch that is ordinary — most days have one like it — so it doesn't call for a special explanation.

By this market's own standards it was a larger-than-usual day: the -1.42% move was larger than 75% of the prior 250 sessions, on a range 0.7x its 20-day average and volume 0.9x. It left a mark on the structure too. The max-pain strike moved up from 719 to 723. Price crossed from above max pain to below it.

Scheduled economic data landed today (see the releases below) — a candidate catalyst, though the tape alone can't prove it. Bonds caught a bid while stocks fell (TLT +0.62%) — money moving toward safety. The largest names did most of the work (Mag 7 average -2.10% vs SPY -0.38%). Put together, the dominant force was mega-cap concentration. Neither macro news nor dealer hedging clearly owned it: on the macro side, bonds made a real move; scheduled data landed; on the dealer side, the range compressed into expiry; a tight range above the estimated gamma-flip level, where dealer hedging tends to dampen moves.

The move itself reads more like a liquidity pocket — a sizable move on thin confirmation. It lacked above-average volume, broad participation, credit confirmation, a close that held the move, alignment with the medium-term trend. Into the Oct 30 expiry (1 day out), QQQ closed $7.66 below the 723 max-pain strike, between the largest put concentration at 690 and the largest call concentration at 740.
