Short term
A quiet night, then an afternoon jump during the FOMC statement
Nasdaq futures stayed quiet overnight, printing their low the prior evening at 6:05 p.m. and drifting to a high by 4:05 a.m., ending 115.50 points above the prior close and opening in the upper half of that range — a swing about 0.6 times the size of a typical night. The real move came after the bell. QQQ opened little changed at $724.12, slid to a low of $720.30 by 9:50 — breaking the overnight low — then surged through both the day's earlier high and the overnight high in a single fast stretch, closing at $725.61, up 0.60%.
The session arc traced a clean V: the opening hour cost $1.98, midday was flat, and the final two hours added $2.83, erasing the morning's slide. The fastest stretch ran from 2:15 to 2:45, when QQQ rose $3.15 in half an hour — 8.2 times the typical pace for that window, on 3.0 times the usual volume. It landed in the window of the FOMC's policy statement at 2:00 and press conference from 2:30, the clearest candidate for the trigger, though the tape alone can't prove it. The move ranked faster than 85% of comparable stretches over the past 20 sessions, yet it carried no footprint of a gamma squeeze — call volume and the put-call mix both stayed close to typical.
Underneath, the signals diverged. Bonds fell hard, the long-bond fund down 0.76%, while stocks rose — a classic pairing in reverse and the clearest read on what moved the index. Credit held flat, and the largest stocks slipped 0.29% on average even as the broad market and small caps advanced. The VIX eased 3.42% to 16.92, consistent with the calmer close.
By this market's own standards, the day was ordinary: the 0.60% move ranked ahead of only 42% of the past 250 sessions, on below-average range and volume. The size of the day was noise; the half hour inside it was the signal. The fund's status held at pullback, unchanged from the prior session.
Heading into the Oct 29 expiry, one day out, QQQ closed $6.61 above the 719 max-pain strike, between the largest put concentration at 660 and the largest call concentration at 745. Max pain marks the strike at which the most options would expire worthless for their holders, based on open positions, and it shifted up from 715 the prior session. Today's high of $726.14 and low of $720.30 mark the near-term edges of the range.
Best to your trading!
