Short term
QQQ shakes off an overnight round trip to climb on broad risk appetite
Nasdaq futures round-tripped overnight: a high 322 points above the prior cash close by 8:45 p.m. the prior evening gave way to a low just 38.5 points above that close by 6:20 a.m., before a partial recovery left them up 186 points, or 0.63%, at the open. The gain was built in Asian hours and then eroded through European trading into that pre-dawn low, before firming again into the cash open, which landed near the middle of the overnight range. QQQ carried that firmness into the day, opening at $722.22 and closing at $725.20, up 1.05%. Broad risk appetite, not any single theme, did the describing today.
QQQ dipped to its session low of $719.71 by 9:45 a.m. in the opening hour, little changed overall, then climbed through midday to a high of $727.95 by 1:25 p.m. before giving back $1.22 in the final two hours to close near, not at, that high. The overnight low held through the session; the overnight high was cleared by 11:40 a.m.
Underneath, the largest stocks led with an average gain of 0.88%, while the broad market gauge added 0.53% and its equal-weight version 0.36% - up less, but still up, which is the mark of participation rather than concentration. Credit moved the same way, with the high-yield funds up 0.2% and 0.16%, bonds firmed slightly, and the VIX fell 3.7% to 16.67. A fast stretch between 2:40 and 3:10 took QQQ down 0.50% at more than seven times its typical pace for that window, but that kind of burst shows up in most sessions and isn't a special tell on its own.
By this market's own history, today was ordinary both in size and pace: the move ranked larger than 62% of the past 250 sessions, on a range matching its typical 20-day range and volume running a bit under it. Nothing today cleared the bar for a structural change.
Heading into the Oct 22 expiry, one day out, QQQ closed $5.20 above the 720 max-pain strike, between the largest put concentration at 708 and the largest call concentration at 736. The max-pain strike marks the price at which the greatest value of outstanding options would expire worthless; it is a measure of where positioning sits, not a magnet for price. The close moved from below that strike to above it, leaving today's high and low, $727.95 and $719.71, as the nearer markers for now.
Best to your trading!
