Short term
Mega-caps drag QQQ to an unusual pullback while equal-weight holds firm
Nasdaq futures reached a high of 30,891.50 by 11:25 p.m. the prior evening before selling steadily through the night, finishing down 237 points (-0.77%) at the 9:30 open. Most of that decline built in the US pre-market, where futures fell 210.75 points on 2.2 times the usual volume, landing in the window of the 8:30 a.m. CPI release. QQQ opened near the overnight low at $737.98, well below the prior close of $743.57, and closed at $728.95, down 1.97%, as a handful of the largest stocks did most of the damage while the equal-weight measure of the broad market held up far better.
The open's early bounce reached a session high of $740.53 by 9:50; the overnight high held for the rest of the day even as the overnight low was broken by 9:35 a.m. The real damage came at midday, which alone cost $8.10 (-1.10%) after an opening hour that had already shed $1.87. The final two hours added back $0.83, a modest recovery off the $726.39 low printed at 3:10 p.m.
The fastest stretch of the day ran from 1:00 to 1:30, a $2.87 drop that cleared the session's earlier low near $729.25. It moved at 5.8 times the typical pace for that time of day, but a burst like that shows up on most sessions and carried no special meaning for today's story.
The decline wasn't broad. The equal-weight measure of the broad market (RSP) fell just 0.57%, and the Dow-tracking fund (DIA) slipped only 0.11%, while the largest stocks averaged a 1.91% decline and small caps (IWM) dropped 1.93% alongside them. Bonds caught a bid (TLT +0.66%) and credit eased modestly too (HYG -0.36%, JNK -0.44%), both leaning toward caution. The VIX, which prices the cost of near-term options protection, jumped 10.35% to 16.85.
By this market's own history, it was an unusual day: the 1.97% decline was larger than 90% of the past 250 sessions, with a range 1.84 times the recent average and volume 1.5 times normal. The medium-term read moved from trending to pullback, and the max-pain strike for the Oct 15 options expiration slipped from 748 to 744.
Options expire on Oct 15, one day out, and QQQ's close sat $15.05 below the 744 max-pain strike — the price level where the largest combined number of calls and puts would expire worthless. The largest put concentration in the chain sits at the 690 strike, with the largest call concentration at 770.
