Short term
QQQ reverses an overnight slide, closes near session highs
Nasdaq futures fell one-way through the night, down 276.25 points (-0.89%) by the 9:30 open, with the bulk of the slide — 215 points — built in Asian hours on volume 1.5 times a typical night. Cash opened near the overnight low, and QQQ pushed briefly below it to $738.83 at 9:35 before turning higher, climbing to a session high of $744.20 by 10:05 and closing at $743.57, down just 0.33% from the prior close — a day session that undid most of what the night had done within its first hour.
The recovery came early and held. The opening hour alone added $3.18 (+0.43%), doing most of the repair work. Midday gave back a sliver, $0.81 (-0.11%), before the final two hours added another $1.77 (+0.24%), leaving QQQ to close just below its session high.
Underneath, the tone leaned defensive rather than driven by one theme. Bonds caught a bid, with TLT up 0.41%, while credit slipped in the same direction as stocks, HYG down 0.26% and JNK down 0.29%. Small caps lagged more than the index, IWM down 0.42%, while SPY was little changed, down just 0.01%. None of it pointed to a single cause — just a broad, modest pullback in risk appetite that bonds and credit both confirmed.
By this market's own history, it was a quiet session. The day's move was larger than only 24% of the past 250 sessions, the range ran 0.69 times a typical day's, and volume was lighter too, at 0.85 times average. The VIX barely moved, up 0.39% to 15.27. Nothing in the session cleared the bar for a structural change — the early break of the overnight low and the recovery that followed were ordinary, not a mark to carry forward.
Into the October 14 expiry, one day out, QQQ closed $4.43 below the 748 max-pain strike, which marks the price where the largest share of options would expire worthless. That leaves the close sitting between the largest put concentration at 730 and the largest call concentration at 750.
