Short term
Overnight slide gives way to a steady QQQ close near max pain
Nasdaq futures fell in a one-way slide overnight, down 246.5 points (-0.78%) from the prior close by the 9:30 open, with European hours doing most of the damage on volume 1.5 times its usual pace before the pre-market extended the loss into the open. QQQ gapped down to start the day, but the day session clawed back nearly all of that overnight damage, closing down just $1.93, or -0.25%, at $757.73 — a close that landed almost on top of the 756 max-pain strike for an expiry one day out, the clearest footprint of options positioning holding the fund in place, not of new information.
The day's own low printed early, $751.75 at 9:50 a.m., just after the overnight low was breached at 9:40 a.m.; the overnight high, set the prior evening, held for the rest of the session. From there QQQ ground higher through midday, including a brief run between 11:20 and 11:50 that added $1.65 at roughly 2.5 times the day's usual pace and cleared the morning's earlier high of $755.62 by 11:40. The session high, $758.30, came in the final minutes before the close, with QQQ settling just below it.
Underneath, the day's calm surface hid some divergence. The broad market fell about as much as QQQ did, but the average stock within it dropped -0.81%, blue-chip shares fell -0.69%, and small caps fell -1.29% — a reminder that the largest stocks, averaging -0.26%, carried the index while the rest of the market lagged. Credit stayed quiet, with high-yield bonds down -0.12% and -0.13%, long bonds eased -0.17%, and the VIX barely moved, up 0.47% to 15.08.
By this market's own history, it was an ordinary day: the -0.25% move was larger than only 17% of the past 250 sessions, on a range and volume both running about 0.8 times their recent average. Nothing here crossed into anything structural. The max-pain strike is the price at which the greatest number of outstanding options would expire worthless; dealers who are short options have an incentive to hedge in ways that keep price near that strike into expiry.
Into the Oct 8 expiry, one day out, QQQ closed $1.73 above the 756 max-pain strike, bracketed by the largest put position at 755 and the largest call position at 770. Today's high of $758.30 and low of $751.75 round out the levels in play.
Best to your trading!
