Short term
QQQ closes at a 20-session high after fading off its intraday peak
Nasdaq futures had a quiet night, slipping to a low of 31,308.75 by 10:40 p.m. the prior evening before climbing to a high of 31,539.25 by 8:20 a.m., a net gain of 175.50 points into the open. The cash market opened near the overnight high, and QQQ pushed through it by 9:35 a.m. on its way to its highest close in over 20 sessions — though the close came well off the day's own high, a reminder that the day's main number told only part of the story.
QQQ opened at $760.46, above the prior close of $756.20, dipped to a session low of $759.10 by 9:40, then worked higher through midday to a high of $762.86 by 11:20. The final two hours gave back $1.23, or 0.16%, and the fund closed at $759.66, up $3.46, or 0.46%, on the day. The opening hour and midday were both little changed; the fade came late.
Underneath, the gains were broad. The broad market rose 0.55%, its equal-weight version rose 0.57%, and the large caps averaged a 0.51% gain — agreement that points toward broad risk appetite rather than a narrow push from a handful of names. Credit moved the same way, with high-yield funds up 0.38% and 0.39%. Small caps were the exception, falling 0.72%, a divergence worth noting even if it didn't change the tone of the day. The VIX fell 3.29% to 15.01.
By this market's own history, today was ordinary: the 0.46% move was larger than just 32% of the past 250 sessions, on a range running 0.48 times its recent average and volume at 0.79 times usual. The one thing that stays is the close itself — the highest in over 20 sessions. The tight range into the Oct 7 expiry carries something of the footprint of dealer hedging, though volume alone can't prove that out.
Heading into the Oct 7 expiry, one day out, QQQ closed $9.66 above the 750 max-pain strike. That level also holds the largest concentration of puts in the chain, while the largest concentration of calls sits at 762, just above today's high. Nothing about the session demands a reaction from here.
Best to your trading!
