QQQ Climbs to Its Highest Close in Over 20 Sessions After a Two-Sided Overnight Swing
Nasdaq futures spent the night swinging both ways before settling almost where they started. They climbed to 31,224 by 9:45 p.m. the prior evening, then gave up 265.25 points to a low of 30,958.75 by 5:45 a.m. — a decline built in Asian hours (-30 points) and extended through European trading (-17.25 points), both on heavier-than-usual volume — before recovering some ground into the open, which left futures down just 14.75 points, or -0.05%, from the prior close. QQQ did not carry that hesitation into the day: it pushed through the overnight high by 9:50 a.m. and closed at its highest level in over 20 sessions.
The fund opened near the prior close of $749.58 at $749.34, dipped to its session low of $749.08 by 9:35, then climbed steadily through the day. The opening hour did most of the early work, adding $4.26, before midday added a smaller $1.51. The fastest stretch came late, in the final two hours, when a quick burst cleared the session's earlier high of $755.73 and carried QQQ to its high of $756.92 by 3:20 p.m. It closed at $756.20, up $6.62, or 0.88%, near that high with only a modest give-back.
Underneath, the day read as a shift out of safety rather than a broad risk-on move. The largest stocks did more than their share of the lifting, with the Mag 7 group averaging a 1.18% gain against a 0.67% rise in the broad market gauge, while bonds sold off, with TLT down 0.48%. Credit held essentially flat, and the VIX barely moved, up 1.37% to 15.52, a reading that carried no information about the day.
None of this was large by the fund's own history. The 0.88% move ranked ahead of just 56% of the past 250 sessions, on a range in line with recent norms and volume running below it. An ordinary day, in other words, that still left QQQ at its highest close in over 20 sessions.
Into the Oct 6 expiry, one day out, the max-pain strike — the price at which the most options would expire worthless, and a level heavy positioning can sometimes hold a price near into expiry — rose from 740 to 745. QQQ's close sat $11.20 above that strike, between the largest put concentration at 740 and the largest call concentration at 770.
