Dominant force today

Today was driven by interest rates. Bonds and stocks moving the same way points at yields as the common driver.

ConditionsAn ordinary session in both size and pace.

Short term

A quiet night gives way to a rate-driven slide for QQQ

Nasdaq futures were quiet overnight, easing 24 points (-0.08%) into the open after a swing that touched both sides of the prior close. The cash session took over from there: QQQ opened near its prior close, touched a session high within minutes, then reversed and broke below the overnight low by 9:40 a.m. Interest rates, not the overnight session, set today's tone.

QQQ opened at $746.97, nudged to a session high of $747.13 by 9:35, then fell to a session low of $738.19 by 10:30, before closing at $741.21, down 0.84% from the prior close and just off the day's low. The opening hour did nearly all the damage, losing $7.88 (-1.05%); midday clawed back $2.20 (+0.30%), and the final two hours were flat.

The fastest stretch of the day ran from 9:50 to 10:20, a $5.04 (-0.68%) drop that moved 5.7 times the pace typical for that window and on 1.5 times the usual volume, carrying QQQ through the prior session's low of $740.93 at 10:15. It looked sharp in the moment, but a burst like that shows up on most trading days and didn't call for a special explanation.

Underneath, the day read as a rates story. Bonds moved with stocks rather than against them — the long-Treasury fund TLT fell 1.58%, more than QQQ itself — and credit funds HYG and JNK fell 0.72% and 0.79%, in line with the broader decline. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions, so a broad decline in Treasury funds points to yields moving higher. Small caps bore the brunt, with IWM down 1.84%, and the VIX, a volatility gauge, rose 6.83% to 15.18.

By this market's own history, none of it was unusual. The 0.84% decline was larger than just 55% of the past 250 sessions, the day's range ran 1.2 times its recent average, and volume was 1.0x its norm. Nothing today cleared the bar for a structural change — it was an ordinary session in both size and pace, and can be set down as such.

What stands: the max-pain strike, the price at which the greatest number of options would expire worthless, sits at 732 for the Sep 24 expiry, one day out, with QQQ closing $9.21 above it. The largest call position overhead sits at 755, and the session's $747.13 high and $738.19 low remain the near-term markers.

Market internals

Daily change, all bars on one scale.

Breadth was broad — SPY (-0.72%) and RSP (-0.70%) moved roughly together, with small caps (IWM -1.84%) participating. Credit confirmed the move (HYG -0.72%, JNK -0.79%), tracking the same direction as equities. TLT selling off right alongside stocks (-1.58%) is the tell: this reads as a rising-yields-driven day, not a broad risk-off move across the board.
